BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Labour Party (LP) has debunked claims making rounds in the social media circles about its entire political structure in Cross River State collapsing into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Labour Party’s State Publicity Secretary, Dr Lekam Ujong said there is absolutely no truth in such outrageous claims, noting that rumour mongers were at work and purveyors of the ‘wicked’ news are only pursuing their selfish agenda.

Dr Ujong, who described the claims as “spurious and unfounded”, further said the Party’s Senatorial candidate in the 2023 last elections, Rt, Hon Daniel Asuquo’s defection to APC cannot in anyway be interpreted to mean the entire LP’s structure in the state has collapsed into the ruling party.

According to him, individual party members are free to make choices concerning their political beliefs and future, but such decisions should not be used as a yard stick to measure the strength and well being of LP, a political organisation founded on principles of social justice.

He admitted that the country’s political landscape has witnessed certain unbelievable movements and the Labour Party is not an exception.

However, the LP Spokesperson explained that such political movements and re-alignments by certain individuals should not by any means be equated with the entire structure of a political party collapsing into another party.

For him, the Party will not only continue to wax stronger ahead of the 2027 general elections but also stay focused on its role of defending the masses and canvassing good governance delivery in the country.

Though not directly referencing the performance of Governor Otu in Cross River, Ujong said there is nothing attractive about the APC given that it has destroyed the nation’s economy, inflicted pains and poverty on Nigerians in the last eight years of being at the centre.
