Tragedy struck Sunday evening in Calabar, the Cross River State capital as a middle-aged woman reportedly died in an auto crash after her vehicle veered off the road and ran headlong into a tree while chasing her husband and another woman suspected to be his mistress.
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River, Maikano Hassan, who confirmed the incident on Sunday, said it involved a Toyota Highlander and occurred on the Muritala Mohammed Highway in Calabar.
Hassan told reporters Sunday night the incident was caused by overspeeding and claimed the life of the lone female driver who veered off the road into a ditch by the road.
According to him; “Though the woman was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, she was said to have died a few minutes later due to the injury sustained from the incident.”
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the tragedy was triggered when the woman reportedly sighted her husband with a strange lady leaving SPAR Shopping Mall located along Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar on Sunday evening.
The source said a desperate attempt to obstruct the spouse’s car with her Toyota SUV failed as the man quickly manoeuvered his vehicle out of the attempted blockade, dashed out of the complex, and drove straight towards the popular Murtala Muhammed highway, with the angry wife in hot pursuit.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said; “Unfortunately, in a bid to outrun her husband, the woman lost control of the speeding vehicle, veered off the road, and slammed the car headlong into a tree, damaging it beyond repairs and also killing herself in the process.”
