…Mobilises over 30,000 workers for action
Following what the labour movement has described as the “deliberate ‘refusal” of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike to address the welfare concerns of staff of the administration of the territory, the Nigeria Labour Congress ((NLC), has declared a full-scale protest against the management of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
Towards this end, the organised Labour in the FCT has concluded plans for a massive mobilization of its members for the protest.
Accordingly, the NLC, FCT Council has directed all of its affiliate unions to mobilize workers for the mass protest scheduled to commence on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
The NLC said its resolve to embark on the protest, followed what it cited as “unmet demands and unresolved issues” affecting workers’ welfare.
The NLC said the protest is expected to draw over 30,000 workers with the aim to draw attention to workers grievances and push for concrete actions from the FCTA administration.
These were contained in a on Saturday, January 31, 2026 by Comrade Stephen Knabayi, Chairman of the NLC, FCT Council in which affiliate unions were provided with specific “minimum quotas” for member participation to ensure a significant turnout at the nation’s capital.
The FCT Council of the NLC designated Labour House, Central Business District as the primary assembly point where workers are expected to assemble by 7:00 AM to commence the protest.
The Union also urged participants to appear in their respective union attires to demonstrate a unified and organized front.
The participating unions and affiliates include; the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN),
Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPTRE), Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products Workers (NUPSTRAW).
Others include; the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),
Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association (OKADA), Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATAWU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Nigeria Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees (NUAAE), Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Senior Staff Association of Government Owned Companies (SASSGOC), Staff Union of Colleges of Education Nigeria (SUCCOEN), and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
The other participating unions include; COASU – Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, NUCECFWW – National Union of Civil Engineering, Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers, NUMW – Nigeria Union of Mine Workers, AUATON – Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Workers of Nigeria, NURTW – National Union of Road Transport Workers, NUATE – National Union of Air Transport Employees, JUSUN – Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, NUR – Nigeria Union of Railwaymen, NUP – Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUTGTWUN – National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, MOUN – Metal Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, NUBIFIE – National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees, NUPTE – National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees, PRISCTUN – Printing and Publishing Senior Staff Consultative Association of Nigeria, NUHPSW – National Union of Hotels and Personal Services Workers and JUAC – Joint Union Action Committee (Representing all FCTA staff)
