Zamfara Police Narrates How Bandits Kill 18 Hunters

BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – The Zamfara State Police command has said that the murder of 18 persons in Birani village of Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State was carried out by herders against local hunters in the area.

Spokesman of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Mohammed Shehu explained that on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, some bandits ambushed the hunters in the bush and there was a clash that led to fatality from both sides. 

Shehu said that on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, hunters from Birani village of Zurmi Local Government Area intercepted and accosted a herder in the bush with some suspected stolen cattle and sheep.

According to him; “The herder abandoned the animals and escaped into the Bush. Unknown to the hunters, the cattle rustler went to Isah LGA of Sokoto State and mobilised bandits to attack the hunters.

“Police, military and other sister agencies, who reacted by combing the bush and its environs to salvage the situation discovered 18 dead bodies. While it is believed that the bandits took away their own persons that were killed.”

Shehu said that bush combing is in progress so as to further profile the area just as Mobile Policemen, Special Forces and the military have fortified the affected axis
