  • Endorses CAN’s position as godly

BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Former Speaker, Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has declared as ungodly and disaster in waiting the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket being promoted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 general elections.

This is as he said the position already taken by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on the issue reflects the mind of God who is righteous and just to all people.

The former Speaker said in rejecting the APC’s same-faith ticket for next year’s presidential poll, CAN is expressing its love for the country and all Nigerians given our obvious diversity and the need to embrace inclusiveness in all governance structures for equity sake.

Dogara, who spoke at the 12th General Assembly and Leadership Transition Ceremony and Symposium on the Role of Christian Women and Youths in Politics organized by CAN in Abuja on Wednesday, said in a diverse country like Nigeria, all well meaning citizens must speak up against any potential threat to religious harmony and peaceful coexistence

The Lawmaker insisted that the ruling party’s decision is a recipe for disunity and discontentment among Nigerians, saying; “The position taken by CAN is also the position of notable Christian leaders like Babachir David Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and many others who have spoken against it. It is also the mind of God because we serve the God of justice; Our God is righteous; Our God is the author of diversity, and He desires that we exist together in peace and unity as diverse as we are”.

According to him, “CAN’s position, as much as it is a righteous cause, remains the position of all of us who love righteousness, justice, equity, diversity and are working to harness them for the positive advancement of this country.

“Anybody can say anything, but in as much as what we are standing on is godly, any other position is ungodly. It is either you are for righteousness, inclusiveness, and justice or you are against the peace and unity of this great country.”

Dogara, member representing the Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency of Bauchi State in the lower legislative chamber, also urged women and youths to emulate the lives of Esther and Deborah in the Holy Bible who stood up for Israel in times of national crisis.

Quoting from the book of John 3:3, he further said only those who are Born Again can enter the Kingdom of God and that it is a righteous thing for Born Again Christians to participate in politics.

Furthermore, he drew inspiration from the parable of talents in the Holy Bible, calling on Christians to utilize their individual talents for the advancement of the kingdom in order to impact on their communities and the society as everyone will account before the creator on how they used their talents.

For the former Speaker, participation in politics does not mean everyone must run for elective offices, as the women and the youths can organize and mobilize their communities to participate actively in the democratic process such as voter registration and actual voting for candidates during elections as a way of taking ownership of the electoral process.

Again drawing attention to the scripture that “we are the salt and light of the world”, Dogora said the time has come when Christians can no longer sit on the fence and watch events unfold when such affect good governance and Nigeria’s political direction going forward.
