BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has challenged motorists to be of good behaviour and diligent in observing road traffic regulations for a smooth and hitch-free Easter celebrations this year.

The Cross River State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Joseph Weniebi Tobi, who made call in Calabar, the State capital, lamented that the yuletide seasons are always peak periods of vehicle accidents due to rush and carelessness by impatient motorists.

Accordingly, he said it is imperative for the Corps to commence early sensitisation of all stakeholders on the need to shun bad manners, such as over-speeding, distracted driving, and drunk driving.

He explained that embarking on early awareness campaign aims at making the 2025 Easter celebration smooth and tragedy-free for road users.

Tobi told newsmen that most accidents unfortunately occur because the drivers are so much in a hurry to arrive at their destinations while capitalizing on the influx of passengers in their bid to make quick monetary gains.

He said contrary to views expressed in the public domain, neither good or bad roads are responsible for high rate of vehicle accidents on the nation’s highways.

For him, poor driving culture and the impatience of bad road users remain the main causes of frequent motor accidents on the roads.

The Sector Commander urged road users to develop the habit of always obeying traffic rules and regulations, especially when plying new terrains that they are not very familiar with.

He listed the first charge driving documents required from motorists by FRSC personnel to include drivers license, good tyres, spare tyres, functional windscreen wipers, fire extinguishers and first aid box.

Equally stressing the importance of motorists being road friendly at all times by avoiding drunken behaviour, Mr Tobi urged the public to exhibit the positive attitude of obeying road traffic regulations while embracing road safety as a shared responsibility.

In her remarks, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey, who played host to the Sector Commander, called for synergy of work ethics between FRSC and journalists in the State.

She said the work ethics and statutory responsibilities of both organisations require robust engagement and partnership for the overall common good of society.
