…As new speaker urges Obaseki to respect separation of powers

BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu to as a matter of necessity provide security for the 17 Edo All Progressives Congress legislators that impeached the former Speaker and his Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

This is as the new leadership with 17 members in the Edo House of Assembly led by the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror had their sitting on Friday.

The Chief Law officer of the nation in a letter to the IGP, said the security measure has become necessary to prevent breakdown of law and order.

Malami said that the measure and directive became necessary following a petition dated August 5, 2020 which was filed by Idahosa-West Chambers.

Meanwhile, the 17 lawmakers who are supporting the candidate of their party, the APC for the September 19, governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, said that they are concerned only seven lawmakers in the Edo state house of assembly are loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror at the sitting, told the executive arm of Government in the State to stay clear of the activities of the Assembly by respecting separation of powers.

The new Speaker also directed the freezing of all bank accounts of the House of Assembly until further notice.
