Senator Dino Melaye...Fresh trouble

An Abuja High Court sitting in Apo District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has granted controversial Senator Dino Melaye bail in the sum of N5 million over alleged suicide attempt.

The lawmaker was arraigned before the Court on Wednesday on a six count charge of attempted suicide, escape from custody and damage of police property.

In granting his bail application, the trial judge, Justice Silvanus Oriji also ordered Senator Melaye to produce two sureties in like sum, as part of the conditions.

He also directed that the sureties must be directors in the civil service, who are resident in the FCT, and depose to affidavits of means.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Alex Izinyonu, had told the court that Senator Melaye allegedly escaped from police custody on April 24, 2018, after he broke the glass on the second window of a bus belonging to the Police, using his left elbow.

According to the Police, Senator Melaye reportedly jumped into a waiting vehicle; an action which amounted to an offence punishable under section 327 of the Penal Code Law.

Mr Izinyonu explained that the lawmaker, while being conveyed in a police vehicle to Lokoja, forced his way out of the bus and escaped.

However, Melaye, who represents Kogi West senatorial zone, denied committing the offences and Justice Oriji granted him bail in the sum of N5 million.

Senator Melaye is among the 14 All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators that recently defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)NAN
