Another Setback For Imo PDP As Chairman Quits
- Dumps party for ruling APC
BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM, OWERRI – The spate of electoral misfortunes being suffered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State is continuing unabated. No thanks to Governor Hope Uzodinma’s deft political moves that are currently harvesting great fruits and decimating the umbrella party in the Southeast State.
The latest casualty to hit the PDP is resignation from office of its State Chairman, Charles Ezekwem to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Upping the gale of defection ante on Monday, January 27, Ezekwem said his decision to jump ship was informed by the prevailing circumstances facing the PDP and the prompting of his teeming supporters across the Southeast State.
This development is coming on the heels of defection galore that swept through the Imo State House of Assembly last week with nine lawmakers dumping their former parties to embrace APC that hitherto had no member in the House.
The three parties that lost lawmakers to APC in the Assembly are PDP, Action Alliance (AA) and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
The political blow delivered by Ezekwem’s resignation is also taking place about two weeks after Supreme Court sent PDP’s Emeka Ihedioha packing from Douglas House, Owerri as governor and affirming APC’s flag-bearer, Senator Hope Uzodinma, as the duly governor of the State in March 9, 2019 gubernatorial poll.
Ezekwem, in his resignation letter to the PDP’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, attributed the decision to abandon the opposition party to the “prevailing circumstances” in the state chapter of PDP.
According to him, “In view of the prevailing circumstances within my party vis-a-vis my present standing as the State Chairman of the PDP Imo State and after due consultation with my family, and with the approval of my supporters, I hereby tender my resignation as PDP Chairman Imo State; also as a member of the party in the ward of Okigwe LGA which has been duly communicated to the Ward Chairman.”
The letter further said; “I thank the teaming population of PDP Imo State who thoughtfully elected me as their State Chairman, i sincerely regret all the inconveniences the party faced. I thank the party for the support they gave me and the opportunity to serve in that capacity.”
Meanwhile, insider sources hinted that the last has not been heard of the political tremor within the country’s main opposition party as the days ahead will likely unfold more disturbing events across the State.
