BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – Following the decision by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to extend its ongoing industrial action by two months, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) management has shut down the institution indefinitely.

Announcing that the institution has been closed down until further notice, the university said in a statement in Benin on Tuesday that the students have been ordered to vacate their hostels within 48 hours of the notice.

The statement signed by University’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, said the decision was arrived at after due consultations involving the institution’s management and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, on behalf of the Senate.

According to the statement; “The action has become expedient as there is no justifiable reason for students to continue to stay on campus when lectures and other academic activities are not going on.

“Consequently, students are to vacate the hostels within 48 hours of this notice. They are enjoined to monitor the situation closely in order to be abreast of the school’s eventual re-opening.”

The statement further said that “Management wishes the students safe journey to their respective destinations.”
