Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has castigated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for comparing cost of petrol in Kenya, other African countries with that of Nigeria.
Atiku particularly stressed that such comparisons ignore the harsh economic reality facing Nigerians which is an oil producing country.
He specifically said that there was no basis for such comparisons particularly when considered against the backdrop of the fact that workers in Kenya earn the equivalent of about ₦170,000 as minimum wage which is far above Nigeria’s earnings.
Atiku’s criticism comes amid growing public frustration over rising costs of living particularly that of fuel, and emphasised that economic policies must reflect citizens’ purchasing power, and not just regional benchmarks.
The former Vice President’s remarks have reignited debate over Nigeria’s cost of living crisis, as many Nigerians grapple with soaring transport fares and inflation triggered by petrol price hikes which is becoming a major political flashpoint.
