BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has warned the party leaders and stakeholders to refrain from engineering any internal crisis ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He said though one cannot completely avoid issues and disputations within a family, the party cannot afford to go into next year’s elections as a divided house.

Speaking in Asaba, the Delta State Capital at the inauguration of Ralph Uwechue Road and Storm Drainage projects executed by the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration, Senator Ayu said; “It is normal to have family disagreements within a political party, but whatever the disagreements we may have, let us ensure that it remains a family disagreement.”

In a veiled reference to the existing contention between incumbent Governor Okowa and former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori over the PDP governorship candidate for 2023, the PDP National Chairman pleaded that; “Nothing whatsoever should be done to damage the unity of purpose which has brought about this great development and our winning streak.

“It is said that divided we fall and united we stand. The PDP family in Delta must remain united and I have no doubt in my mind that come next year, the governor of this state and all members of the state and National Assembly will all come from the PDP.”

Noting that Delta State has remained a safe haven for PDP since the inception of the current democratic dispensation in 1999, Senator Ayu said lightheartedly; “We don’t lose elections in Delta and we are not going to, particularly with the performance of Governor Okowa.”

Feelers from the South-South state indicate that both camps are throwing their weights in support of different aspirants for the gubernatorial seat as Okowa’s successor in next year’s general elections.
