- Ronald Araujo emerges club’s new skipper
- Set in motion disciplinary action
Spanish giants and La Liga Champions, FC Barcelona have issued a statement confirming that Marc-Andre ter Stegen is no longer the club’s captain.
In his place, the current second captain, player Ronald Araujo has taken over the captaincy duties immediately to fill the gap for the 2025/2026 season.

Also, the Catalan giants announced that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against their goalkeeper in an official statement.
The Club’s official statement read thus: “FC Barcelona informs that, following the disciplinary proceedings opened against the player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this procedure is definitively resolved, the Club, in agreement with the Sports Management and the technical staff, has decided to temporarily remove him from the captaincy of the first football team.
“During this period, the duties of first captain will be assumed by the current second captain, player Ronald Araujo.”
This latest development comes on the heels of speculation Wednesday that Ter Stegen would lose the armband after refusing to sign a medical report following surgery on a back issue that will keep him sidelined for months.
Having now made their anger at the goalkeeper quite clear, the move is seen as indicating that relationship between the two have hit an all-time low.
Meanwhile, Manager Hansi Flick’s side will aim to shift attention to on-field matters amid the feud between the club and Ter Stegen.
The Blaugrana will take on Italian side Como, managed by ex-Barca midfielder Cesc Fabregas, in the Joan Gamper Trophy game on Sunday, August 10, before kicking off their league title defence away at Mallorca on August 16, 2025.
