BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – Celebrated Igbo clergy, Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church of Nigeria and the Senator representing Anambra North, Senator Stella Oduah have faulted as despicable the behaviour of former first lady of Anambra State, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano for slapping Mrs Bianca Ojukwu, widow of the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu

The unfortunate incident, involving Ebelechukwu, the wife of immediate-past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, occurred during the inauguration of Professor Chukwuma Soludo as the new Governor of Anambra State at the Government House Awka on Thursday.

Reacting to the sad episode, Bishop Onuoha described as an embarrassment to Ndigbo the former First Lady’s action, insisting that she displayed a lack of respect and threw caution to the wind by slapping Ojukwu’s wife without regard to what Ojukwu represents to the Igbo nation.

Similarly, Senator Oduah in condemning the incident said; “In strong terms, this is an unwarranted attack against the wife of an illustrious son and our very own Ikemba. I wish to add that the action exhibited by the former first lady was indecorous and unbecoming of a woman who had acted as a mother of the state and even desirous of serving in other capacities.”

For Bishop Onuoha, who described the late Ojukwu as an Iconic institution to the Igbo race, Ebelechukwu Obiano’s behaviour was shameful irrespective of her reasons, and Igbo women should rise in unison and mete out appropriate sanctions on her to serve as a deterrent.

”I want every responsible Igbo woman to rise and teach her that what she did not represent the Igbo woman. That’s not who we are. In fact, that despicable action has also further indicated that she was not prepared to leave office. It just dawned on her that she was leaving.”

Away from the ugly drama, the respected cleric urged Soludo to always defer to the Anambra people who defied security threats in the state to ensure his emergence as the governor, stressing the need for him to vigorously pursue people-oriented projects as the best way to reciprocate the people’s mandate.

According to him; ”Soludo should know that he was massively elected by the people of Anambra and he should concentrate on those projects and programmes that will add value to their lives. God has given him the opportunity to provide the needed leadership and he cannot afford to fail”.

On her part, Senator Oduah said it was unfortunate that the former first lady of Anambra State, Mrs Obiano threw decorum to the winds in openly attacking Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu at the ceremony.

In a statement released on Thursday in Awka, the Anambra state capital, she said; “More condemnable is even the gutter and vulgar language used by Mrs Obiano to describe her fellow woman, who is even a widow. I have always held the view that it is only weak minds that label hardworking women like Bianca with nasty names.

“And it is more unfortunate when a woman, especially one that has been around the corridors of power, is the one hurling such baseless and regretful invectives against her fellow woman. What the world witnessed today at the swearing-in ceremony is utterly disgraceful, unfortunate, crude, and should never be emulated by the millions of our young girls and women who often look up to public figures with respect on how they conduct themselves.

“Only a few days ago, an innocent woman was publicly paraded naked in the same community our former first lady hails from and one would have thought that rather than showcase this brute nature of fighting and engaging in public fisticuffs with her guest, she should have exerted same energy and fighting spirit in ensuring that justice is done for that widow.

“It saddens me a great deal to see the wife of an illustrious Anambra son, the pride of Ndigbo and an achiever that was once an ambassador of the Federal Republic, being attacked unprovoked and I join all right-thinking persons in praying that we never ever record this type of travesty again in our history as a state.” – With Vanguard reports
