BY STEPHEN BULUS, KAFANCHAN – The weekend turned out bloody and deadly as a total of 25 persons and a police inspector were killed by terrorist herdsmen in Kaura, Kajuru and Kachia local government areas of Kaduna state.
Yesterday’s attack on Kukum Daji In Kaura LGA led to the death of no fewer than 16 people and a police inspector, while another 31 persons sustained various degrees of injuries after the attack.
The President of the Community, Mr. Yashen Sunday Titus, confirmed the attack today and said the attack took place at 10:35pm yesterday Sunday. He disclosed that the victims were shot to death while celebrating a wedding in one of the compounds in the community.
“The attackers stormed the Village at exactly 10:35pm heavily armed and start shooting sporadically at the villagers. No fewer than 17 people were killed on the spot, while out of the 32 persons taken to the hospital, one later died. Some of the villagers are still missing. A police station was attacked and an inspector was killed” said Titus.
Our reporter reliably gathered that no fewer than 21 injured persons were said to be taken to the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (formerly Nursing Home), Kaduna for medical attention. The remaining are receiving treatment at Throne Room medical facility in Kafanchan.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Kaura LGA Chairman, Hon Humble Katuka, turned our unsuccessful as his phones were not reachable.
Meanwhile, tension is presently brewing between the community and the military deployed to avert breakdown of law and order.
“The military personnel are pressuring us to bury the dead. However, some of us are mourning our lost and awaiting the arrival of our representatives at the National Assembly and our clerics.
“Presently, we have corpses of 10 girls and five boys. The other corpse is yet to be brought from the hospital,” the source said.
Last Friday July 17, 2020, five persons were murdered, with Mr. Ayuba Bulus( 40) of Efele Doka Avong village, in Kajuru LGA slaughtered like a ram in the farm. An hour later, four others, comprising two kids, a woman and man were murdered. The killed were Faith Shagari (3 years); Dorcas Shagari (6 years)’ Gloria Shagari (25) and Hussaini Daudu (40 years).
In Mai-Ido village, Kachia LGA, where four were killed and no fewer than 10 kidnapped, the gunmen had launched an attack on the village at the weekend after two vehicles conveying strange herdsmen the previous week were caught.
According to a resident, Chris Maiyaki, “Penultimate Wednesday, villagers had noticed a vehicle carrying strange herdsmen to surrounding bushes where they alighted from the vehicle and disappeared into the forest. Someone who saw them alerted the youth to stop the driver.
“When the driver was stopped, the youths insisted on knowing the motives behind dropping these strange herdsmen. While interrogating the driver, another vehicle, a bus to be precise, arrived with yet another set of strange-looking herdsmen. The youths stopped the second vehicle and sought to know from driver his mission.
“Not satisfied with the answers given by the bus driver, the youths went ahead to search the vehicle and recover bullet-proof vests, machetes, swords, Indian hemp, among others.”
In order not to take the law into their hands, Maiyaki added, the youths took both vehicles and their occupants to the police station for further interrogation after they had briefed the village head.
This news medium learnt that after spending three days in the police station in Kachia, the suspects were summarily released on the orders of higher authorities and, shortly after, the village came under attack last Friday where four persons were killed and 10 persons abducted.
“The community is yet to receive any information on the whereabouts of their abducted members, and no phone call received from anyone demanding a ransom for the freedom of the abducted,” another source disclosed.
Efforts to get the Kachia LGA chairman, Hon. Peter Agite, prove abortive as his telephone lines could not be reached.
