Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on Monday freed several humanitarian workers and civilians abducted during one of their attacks in North East, Nigeria.

It was gathered that among the aid workers and civilian abductees were released by the terrorists group after negotiations is a staff of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Idris Alooma, who was abducted along the Damaturu-Maiduguri road in January this year.

The terrorists group also freed a Christian cleric, Reverend Zango and a former staff member of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Barka Wasinda and other aid workers abducted from a facility in Dikwa in March 2021.

The released aid workers and the other freed persons, it was further gathered are presently receiving medical support.

Information pieced together by Forefront News indicated that most of the released captives were abducted during attacks on parts of Borno State between March and May, and also in June 2021.

During one of such attacks, the terror group overran Dikwa, destroyed support facilities, including a primary health care centre as well as laid siege to the United Nations humanitarian hub, which forced aid workers to seek shelter in a bunker.

The development forced the United Nations to suspend its operations in response to the attacks on humanitarian operations in Dikwa and Damasak, thereby affected humanitarian assets and workers.

However, there is yet any official confirmation of the release of the captives by either the military spokespersons or the United Nations.
