Borno Suicide Attack Claims Six Lives – Police

The Police Command in Borno State says no fewer than six people have been killed and 15 others injured in a suicide attack in Gwoza, Borno State.

According to the reports, tragedy struck late on Saturday when the suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) in Gwoza town.

Available reports on the incident indicated that the attack occurred at a busy motor park in the area popularly called Marrarraban Gwoza.

While confirming the attack, Borno State Commissioner of Police (CP), Yusuf Lawal, said it was carried out by a female suicide bomber.

CP Lawal further said information reaching him from the Divisional Police Officer in Gwoza, showed that at least six lives were lost with 15 other persons evacuated to the hospital for medical attention

An eye witness account documents  that the suicide bomber had targeted a wedding ceremony, adding that the development shattered the joy and celebration of the special day.

An insider, who did not want his name in print, stated that the unfortunate event left many families, loved ones, friends and well-wishers at wedding in mourning.

Another witness, who gave his name as Muhammed Kasim, said that the attack happened around 1:30 p.m, adding; “We heard a very loud sound of explosive, accompanied with dust; then we saw bodies on the ground.”

He further said several victims were evacuated to the hospital while security agencies were deployed to cordon off and ensure improved security around the area.

Reacting to the incident, a member representing Gwoza/Chibok/Damboa federal constituency, Ahmed Usman Jaha a.k.a Babawo, sympathized with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the attacks.

The lawmaker prayed to Allah to grant the souls of the deceased Aljannatul Firdaus, and wished those who sustained injuries quick recovery.

Gwoza is a town located in southern Borno bordering the Cameroun Republic. It was hitherto declared Boko Haram territory after it was captured by insurgents with hundreds of people killed before it was later liberated by Nigerian troops after several months of heavy fighting.- With additional NAN report
