Highhandedness: Teacher Beats Female Student Into Coma

BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – In what has been described as an outright display of wickedness of a teacher in punishing students, an SS3 female student of Government Girls Science Secondary School (GGSSS) Kuje, Christabel Mimi Henry, was on Friday evening beaten into a state of coma by her teacher, simply identified as David.

According to Christabel’s father, Mr. Henry Iortim, he received a distress call from one of the students, requesting him to visit the General Hospital, Kuje, as his daughter had been rushed to be revived, after been assaulted and  beaten with a rod by the teacher.

“On arrival at the hospital at 9pm on Friday, my daughter was in pain as severe injury has been inflicted on her hands. I was informed that the teacher insisted on beating all the students in the class on account of a student that made noise.

“I was told that my daughter had requested the teacher to fish out the noisemaker for punishment, instead of punishing the entire class. In a fit of rage, he rained several slaps on my girl and thereafter got a rod and beat her into a state of unconsciousness.

“My daughter is presently writing the WASC examination and I fear that her state of health may affect her performance. It is quite sad that teachers who are supposed to be model in discipline now resort to inflicting injuries on students who are supposed to be under their care,” Iortim told our correspondent.

Mr. Iortim told our correspondent that two teachers from the school rushed Christabel to the hospital for medical attention.

“It is obvious that they never wanted us to know the condition of my daughter. I thank God one of the students put a call to me to come over to the hospital and see what was happening to my daughter. The behaviour of the teacher is unprofessional. No teacher should be allowed to inflict such  injuries on any student placed under his care,” Iortim said.

Attempts to speak to the principal proved abortive as her phone could not be reached when our correspondent placed a call for her comments.

As at the early morning hour of today Saturday, Christabel, who was on a drip, was yet to regain consciousness.
