BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Cross River chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to bounce back and maintain its stranglehold on the State’s political scene following the recent defection of Governor Ben Ayade to All Progressive Congress (APC).

Already, key PDP stalwarts are consulting widely and mapping out plans to reposition the Party for improved electoral fortunes in the new dispensation.

Rising from a soul-searching meeting convened to address emerging challenges posed by Ayade’s exit, the new opposition party urged its members and supporters to redouble efforts at ensuring the State remains with PDP going forward.

Addressing a huge crowd of party faithful at the Transcorp Hotel in Calabar on Sunday, former governor, Liyel Imoke said this period demands all hands to be on deck in salvaging PDP from the ruins that Governor Ayade’s tenure has made of the once glowing and darling party of Cross Riverians.

He said it is a wake-up call for all Stakeholders and lovers of PDP to return to the grassroots for effective mobilisation of the people towards the 2023 general elections.

Imoke, who charged the stakeholders to pledge their commitment to the party’s tradition and rebuilding process, said; “I thought I have retired from active politics. I was retiring in bits and handing over to some people but I had to come back at this time. Our tradition in PDP was destroyed; so we have to come back. Our politics is sweet; we don’t play politics of fear; We don’t play politics of intimidation, and we don’t play politics of harassment. PDP is not dead in Cross River State.”

Amid deafening cheers from the supporters, Senator Imoke assured them the meeting has provided ample opportunity to properly access the situation of ground and the way forward.

The former governor boasted that the outcome of the 2023 elections would prove to everyone that Cross River remains a diehard PDP state.

He received a standing ovation maintaining that those thinking the foundation of PDP in the state has been shaken following Ayade’s exit are merely daydreaming.

According to Imoke, as events continue to unfold, daily shockers await all doubting Thomases as PDP will not back down but demonstrate that it remains the party to beat in the South-South state.

The PDP Stakeholders’ meeting arranged to access the strength and weaknesses of the party due to recent exodus led by the governor.

Insiders hinted that being an opportunity for PDP to do a serious self-examination, the Forum was attended by all the party’s National Assembly members, except two, Hon Legor Idagbo, representing Obudu and Bekwarra Federal Constituency, and Mike Etaba, who represents Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, in the House of Representatives.
