No fewer than ten persons have been confirmed dead following a cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Available reports from the State Ministry of Health indicated that the outbreak, noticed in the area on Monday, 23rd September 2024, unfortunately claimed the life of a nursing mother who left behind a 9-month-old baby.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, who spoke during the Rapid Response at Iziogo Health Centre on Wednesday, confirmed the incident, saying that aside from the 10 deaths recorded, about 20 affected persons were currently responding to medical treatment.

While highlighting efforts by the Ebonyi State government to mitigate and control the situation, Dr Ekuma commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for approving funds for the procurement of medical supplies to address the outbreak.

He further said three treatment centres, including Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission, Onuenyim, and Ndibokote villages, have been established in the area.

The Commissioner urged residents to take precautionary measures to prevent the further spread of the disease, adding; “Once you start experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, or even any related symptoms, you should rush to any of these emergency treatment centres.”

On the emergency rapid response, Dr Ekuma said government embarked on remedial measures to avoid further loss of life in the area and lauded Development Partners such as the World Health Organisation and UNICEF for their unique support and intervention.
