Coup In Sudan
Report from Sudan indicates that the some military officers on Monday have carried out the arrest of most of the members of the country’s cabinet as well as a large number of pro-government party leaders in what appeared like a military coup.
This is as the Ministry of Information announced that the “Joint Military Forces” had arrested civilian members of the Sovereign Council and members of the government and taken them to an undisclosed location.
The military has however not commented over the development as the Sudanese state Television is still broadcasting its normal programs.
A Reuters witness said the Joint Forces from the military and from the powerful, paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been stationed in the streets of Khartoum.
Sudan has been on edge since a failed coup plot in September unleashed bitter recriminations between military and civilian groups meant to be sharing power following the 2019 ouster of former leader Omar al-Bashir, who was toppled and jailed after months of street protests.
A political transition agreed after his ouster has seen Sudan emerge from its isolation under three decades of rule by Bashir and was meant to lead to elections by the end of 2023. .
