Court Remands Sick Binniyat In Prison Till July 20
BY AMOS TAUNA, KADUNA – A Kaduna State High Court presided over by Justice Bashir Sukola on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 remanded the former Kaduna Bureau Chief of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Luka Binniyat in prison over allegation of false publication filed against him by the Kaduna State government.
Mr. Binniyat, who is recuperating from injuries he sustained in an accident had managed to walk to the court with the help of crutches to enable him make appearance before the trial judge.
Justice Sukola ordered that the Mr. Binniyat, who is on medication should be remanded in prison custody till July 20, 2017 when ruling on his application for bail ould be considered. This was in spite of appeals by his Counsel, Barr. James Kanyip.
The Governor Nasir el-Rufai-led administration had dragged Mr. Binniyat to court on a two count charge of false publication.
Binniyat is being accused of having cause a publication in the Vanguard Newspaper of 22nd January 2017 in which he allegedly reported that five students of the College of Education, Gidan-Waya were killed.
The Journalist is therefore being charged for breach of public peace and injurious falsehood punishable under sections 114 and 393 of the penal code laws of Kaduna State.
Binniyat pleaded not guilty to the charges in which the Vanguard newspaper and its editor were not joined in the suit that has been adjourned to 20th July, 2017 for ruling on the bail application.
