700,539 deaths
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) says from December 31, 2019 to late on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, a total of 18 519 579 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) infections have been confirmed worldwide.
The ECDC explained that the statistics are in accordance with the applied case definitions and testing strategies being reported in the affected countries.
Further stating that these numbers include 700,539 deaths, the ECDC said the data presented were collected between 6:00 and 10:00 CET
In its disclaimer, the Centre also stated that the national updates are published at different times and in different time zones, adding; “This, and the time ECDC needs to process these data, may lead to discrepancies between the national numbers and the numbers published by ECDC.
According to the Center; “users are advised to use all data with caution and awareness of their limitations. Data are subject to retrospective corrections; corrected datasets are released as soon as processing of updated national data have been completed.”
The Centre said from its collated figures, reported cases from various regions indicated thus:
Africa: 978 744 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are South Africa (521 318), Egypt (94 752), Nigeria (44 433), Ghana (37 812) and Algeria (32 504).
Asia: 4 536 904 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are India (1 908 254), Iran (314 786), Saudi Arabia (281 435), Pakistan (281 136) and Bangladesh (244 020).
America: 10 003 225 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are United States (4 771 087), Brazil (2 801 921), Mexico (449 961), Peru (439 890) and Chile (362 962).
Europe: 2 979 402 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are Russia (861 423), United Kingdom (306 293), Spain (302 814), Italy (248 419) and Germany (212 022).
Oceania: 20 608 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are Australia (18 729), New Zealand (1 219), Guam (389), Papua New Guinea (114) and French Polynesia (62).
Other: 696 cases have been reported from an international conveyance in Japan.
Deaths have been reported from:
Africa: 21 089 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are South Africa (8 884), Egypt (4 912), Algeria (1 248), Nigeria (910) and Sudan (763).
Asia: 101 110 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are India (39 795), Iran (17 617), Pakistan (6 014), Turkey (5 765) and Indonesia (5 388).
America: 372 388 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are United States (156 806), Brazil (95 819), Mexico (48 869), Peru (20 007) and Colombia (11 315).
Europe: 205 681 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are United Kingdom (46 299), Italy (35 171), France (30 296), Spain (28 498) and Russia (14 351).
Oceania: 264 deaths; the 6 countries reporting deaths are Australia (232), New Zealand (22), Guam (5), Northern Mariana Islands (2) and Papua New Guinea (2).
Others: 7 deaths have been reported from an international conveyance in Japan.
NOTE: On 17 July 2020, Kyrgyzstan has changed their registration statistics on COVID-19 by introducing two codes (laboratory confirmed cases and clinical-epidemiological cases). This leads to a significant increase in case and death numbers on 18 July 2020.
