COVID-19 Update: Lagos Maintains Lead, Discharges 14,496 Patients

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Despite recording decreasing numbers in the coronavirus (COVID-19) daily infections reportage, Lagos State is still maintaining its leading status as the epicentre of the deadly disease in Nigeria
Current statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) showed that of about 17,092 laboratory confirmed cases, Lagos has 2,395 patients on admission while the figure of its successfully treated and discharged cases currently stands at 14,496 with 201 deaths so far.
Following in second place is the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with a tally of 4,837 confirmed cases; 3,402 patients on admission; 1,389 treated and discharged cases with 46 deaths.
Though the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is said to be contesting the figures. Oyo is currently placed third on the chart with 3,007 confirmed cases; 1,319 patients on admission; 1,654 cases treated and discharged while the fatality figure is 34 deaths.
Meanwhile, Wednesday, August 19, 2020 figures reported by NCDC are the highest daily record of new cases in the month of August, with Plateau topping the list of states with 186 positive samples, followed by Lagos with 172.
According to the NCDC, before Wednesday, the highest number of positive samples for the month was 457, which was confirmed on August 5, 2020
This is coming less than four weeks after Nigeria crossed 40,000 mark. The NCDC had confirmed 40,543 infections as the tally on July 26. Of the number, 17,374 were recoveries while 858 deaths were recorded.
