COVID-19 Update: Nigeria Reports 176 New Cases, Tally Moves To 5,621

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said on Saturday night that 176 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) were recorded in the country, with the total number of infections rising to 5621 cases.

According to uploaded figures on the NCDC’s website, five new fatalities were also confirmed in the last 24 hours with the total number of deaths now at 176 in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As reported for more than a week going, no new state reported a case in the last 24 hours, while 1472 cases have been treated and discharged across the country.

As at May 16, 2020, NCDC said of the 176 new cases that came in from 14 states, including the FCT, Lagos reported the highest figure of (95); followed by Oyo with (31); and FCT – (11).

Others are: Niger and Borno – Eight (8) cases each; Jigawa – Six (6); Kaduna – Four (4); and Anambra – Three (3). Four states, Edo, Rivers, Nasarawa and Bauchi recorded two (2) cases each while Benue and Zamfara had one (1) case each.

With over 32,942 samples tested by the NCDC nationwide, the active cases currently stands at 3,973, even as the NCDC warned that by disregarding COVID-19 prevention measures, Nigerians can put themselves and others at risk of infection.

This is as the Centre also cautioned that places authorised to be opened should operate under controlled access and adhere to preventive measures such as physical distancing.
