COVID-19 Update: Nigeria’s Tally Now 5,445, Records 288 Fresh Cases

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – With another 288 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) as at late Friday, May 15, 2020, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says the total number of confirmed infections in the country has now risen to 5,445.

According to the NCDC, aside the new cases reported in the last 24 hours, three new patients were also confirmed dead from the virus in the country.

The development therefore brings the total number of fatalities to 171 deaths recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Figures reported on NCDC’s website indicated that of the total number of 5,445 cases confirmed till date, 3,959 of them remain active cases, while 1320 patients have been treated and discharged from the different isolation centres and accredited hospitals.

In its breakdown of the 288 new cases reported from 15 states of the Federation, the NCDC said that Lagos has (179); Kaduna – (20); Katsina – (15); Jigawa- (15); Borno – (13); and Ogun – (11).

Also on the list of fresh cases are: Kano – Eight (8); FCT – Seven (7); Niger and Ekiti – Four (4) each; Oyo, Delta and Bauchi – Three (3) each; Kwara – Two (2); and Edo – One (1).

On some observable errors in its reporting test lines, the NCDC explained in a tweet that on 14th of May, 2020, four (4) cases reported from Plateau and one (1) case from Akwa Ibom, were repeat cases

The Centre said with this correction, Plateau state now has a total of 21 cases while Akwa Ibom state has a total of 16 cases

“We apologise to this State Governments for this error and remain committed to ensuring accurate reporting”, the NCDC tweeted.

The Centre further tweeted; “It is important to emphasise that the NCDC does not provide results to individuals”, adding that; “Our role as the national public health institute is to coordinate the communication of results between testing laboratories and States, who then communicate with individuals #TakeResponsibility.”

On the issue of a possible cure for the deadly virus, the NCDC said; “Remember, there is no specific cure for #COVID19

“Clinical trials are ongoing to assess the safety the efficacy of drug and vaccine candidates for public use.”
