COVID-19 Updates: Nigeria’s Fatalities Now 85 Deaths, 2,388 Confirmed Cases

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – Anxiety and concerns remain high as Nigeria’s COVID-19 fatalities reached 85 deaths with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirming 220 new cases late on Saturday, May 2, 2020.

The figure brings the total number of infections to 2,388 cases since the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

According to figures posted on the NCDC’s website, a total of 16,588 samples have so far been tested across Nigeria with the 220 new cases coming from 19 states.

It therefore reported the 19 states’ roll call as: Lagos – (62); FCT – (52); Kaduna – (31); Sokoto – (13); Kebbi – (10); Yobe – (9); and Borno – (6).

Others are Edo and Bauchi – (5) each; Gombe, Enugu and Oyo – (4) each; Zamfara – (3); with Nasarawa, Osun, Ebonyi, Kwara, Kano and Plateau all recording (2) cases each.

Also, in confirming 17 new deaths as as 11.55pm on Saturday, the NCDC said no new state reported a case in the last 24 hours, while the country currently has 1,928 active cases.

The Centre said of the 2,388 confirmed cases nationwide, 385 patients have been treated and discharged, noting that the 85 deaths recorded cut across 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

It also disclosed that the actual number of confirmed cases in Katsina State currently stands at 38, explaining that two cases erroneously reported in Katsina were only results of repeated tests.

The number of infections has risen due to the increased capacity for testing across the country, the NCDC said.
