…Says recall is sponsored by Kogi government.

BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The Senate on Tuesday condemned the Attorney-General of Kogi State, Ibrahim Sanni Mohammed, for what it described as his inability to understand the clear provisions of the Constitution on matters having to deal with recall process of a legislator.

Citing sections 69 of the Constitution, the Kogi Attorney General through paid advertorial placed in newspapers argued that contrary to Ekweremadu’s position, the Senate has no role in the recall process.

The Attorney-General also debunked claims that Kogi State government was behind the recall process, stressing that the exercise was by the people of Kogi West.

However, in a motion raised through a point of Order raised by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, he drew the attention of the Senate to paid advertorials by the Kogi State Attorney-General advising Kogi State government against the position of the Senate on the recall of Senator Dino Melaye.

Ekweremadu, who last week asked Senate not to disturb itself over the planned recall, stressed that he doubts if the “Attorney General of Kogi State has not advised the state government properly.

Ekweremadu further said; “If the Attorney-General had done that, I am sure they would have applied their time to more meaningful venture in the state. The process of recall is equivalent to impeachment of an executive.”

Irked by the Kogi State Attorney General’s interpretation of the constitution, Ekweremadu said the law officer carefully avoided section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended pretending to be ignorant of.

The Deputy Senate President expressed concern over which Law School the Kogi State Attorney General attended and why the State government should hire a law officer that cannot interpret what is clearly stated in the Constitution.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki noted that the defence put up in the advertorial by the Attorney General of Kogi State clearly links him and the state government to the plan to recall Senator Melaye.
