Drivers’ Group Backs C-River APC Chairmanship Aspirant
BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – Barely one week after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Cross River chapter elected its new State Chairman from the North senatorial district, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) seems set to tow the same path with preparations for its rescheduled State Congress now gathering momentum.
A list cited by Forefront shows that about 80 percent of aspirants jostling for the Party’s chairmanship position are from the same Cross River North senatorial zone.
According to political commentators, this development strongly supports permutations that governorship tickets of the two leading parties will be a straight confrontation between the Southern and Central senatorial districts of the State.
This is as stakeholders from Cross River South have remained resolute drumming up support that come 2023, it will be the Zone’s turn to produce the next governor, having waited patiently in the last 16 years.
However, amid ongoing political engagements and consultations, various groupings within the APC are also stepping up their game in a bid to corner the party’s Chairmanship seat ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Over the weekend, the Cross River State Unified Commercial Drivers Association (UCDA) openly joined the political fray by throwing its weight behind one of the APC chairmanship aspirants, Comrade Goddy Nyiam. Nyiam, currently Director General of Cross River Transport Regulatory Agency (CRTRA), is from Ogoja Local Government Area in the North senatorial zone.
State Chairman of UCDA, Pastor Thomas Effiong Okon said the decision to support Comrade Nyiam’s aspirations is based on the efficient and transparent manner he has so far handled the public transportation sector in the state.
Addressing a press conference in Calabar, the State capital, Pastor Okon explained that since assuming office as the CRTRA’s boss, the sector has witnessed great strides and remarkable transformation for the overall good of the State.
He said this is in addition to the reduced strife and observable peace following Comrade Nyiam’s human face approach in dealing with the public, irrespective who may be involved.
