Embrace Deposit Insurance Courses – NDIC Boss Urges ICAN
BY COBHAM NSA – Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Mr Bello Hassan has challenged the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to include Deposit Insurance System (DIS) courses its programs and modules to help deepen Nigeria’s banking public’s understanding of the scheme.
Hassan said such an arrangement is required to bridge the knowledge gap and address misconceptions on the benefits and limitations of the DIS, particularly its contributions to Nigeria’s financial system stability.
According to the NDIC Chief Executive, public awareness remains a critical factor in ensuring the maximum impact and penetration of the DIS’ benefits on the general public and the financial system as a whole.
Hassan, who spoke when ICAN Council Members, led by the President, Mrs Comfort Eyitayo visited the Corporation in Abuja, said partnering with the Institute and other stakeholders to promote public awareness on DIS has become needful given the novel nature of the scheme in Nigeria and the world at large.
He said the NDIC would not relent in placing priority on effective collaboration with strategic stakeholders for productive service and mandate delivery to Nigerians.
The Managing Director, while congratulating Mrs Eyitayo on becoming the 57th ICAN President, charged her to ensure Chartered Accountants continuously uphold the ideals of accuracy and integrity as enshrined in the Institute’s motto.
He also promised that NDIC would continue to offer support to the Institute in a robust partnership aimed at further enhancing the safety and security of Nigeria’s banking sector.
Speaking at the occasion, Mrs Eyitayo appreciated NDIC’s invaluable contributions as a key stakeholder in stabilizing the financial system in Nigeria.
The ICAN President said for an efficient financial services industry, it is important to sustain depositors’ trust and confidence through sustained reassurances on the safety and security of their deposits at all times.
She also expressed ICAN’s commitment to sustaining a thriving partnership with NDIC towards achieving greater awareness of DIS among members of the Institute.
