BY VICTOR BUORO – The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has condemned as sheer wickedness the massive looting and destruction of public and private property that trailed the #EndSARS protests across the country.

This is as he regretted that the North of today remains a far cry from the dreams of the region’s leaders and its people.

According to the Sultan, the violent aftermath of the #EndSARS protests was perpetrated by some criminal minded elements that do not wish Nigeria well.

Sultan Abubakar, who spoke at the 50th anniversary celebration of the North’s Centre for Historical Documentation and Research (CHDR), popularly called Arewa House, in Kaduna, described the massive destruction as unwarranted and doing nobody any good at this stage of the nation’s life.

The revered religious leader lamented that events of “the last couple of weeks was wickedness by disgruntled hoodlums”, and wished that such an ugly development does not happen again.

Abubakar, who graced the event as Royal Father of the day, praised Northern youths for shunning the violent protests, even as he challenged the Northern governors and leaders to engage the youths “part of decision making.”

“Give them projects that will make them feel part of the government”, the Monarch counseled

Also expressing his unhappiness at the level of development in the North, Sultan Abubakar said; “Is the North of today the North we desire? The North where our children are roaming the streets, begging for food? Is it the North where our girls are not going to school?

“The Sardauna of Sokoto wanted to develop the North by building so many projects that are still standing tall. That is left for our political leaders to build on the foundation.”

“Let’s walk together as Arewa, let’s walk together as North, let’s develop Arewa so that we will develop the North”, he pleaded.

In his remarks at the occasion, former Vice President Namadi Sambo urged Nigerian youths to be law abiding even when making demands of government at all levels.

Speaking on the #EndSARS campaign that unfortunately turned violent, Sambo regretted that the protests were mishandled and allow to go out of hand.

“The youth of this great country showed excessive aggression” in handling the protests, the former number two man noted

“Your voice is loud and bold, but you must be calm and law abiding while the Federal Government addresses your demands with the urgency they deserve.

“Fifty years is a long journey which calls for sober reflection. Arewa House is a center of national harmony and cohesion.

“Arewa House remains one of the centers in Nigeria that bring people together from global diversity”, Sambo said
