FCT: Fear Of Tremor Grips Mpape Residents

Residents of Mpape, situated in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but within the Capital City which houses a chunk of the working and business population of the territory are presently living in fear over possible tremor.

This followed serious earth vibrations they have been experiencing since the month of September but increasing in the last four days.

The vibrations are such that wake resident up from sleep as buildings in the area are shaken to their foundation levels with sounds similar to that of earth tremor.

Similar incidents took place in 2019 in the area which led to most of the inhabitants of Mpape relocating to other parts of the city center and other parts of the territory.

Authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration later adduced the cause of the earth vibration to the activities of some companies carrying out quarry activities which were directed to put a halt.

Residents of the area are of the view that if the resumed operations of the companies involved in quarry are not quickly checked, the entire Mpape may soon be buried underground.

Some of the residents expressed serious concerns over what they described as clear signs of tremor, saying that whenever the earth vibration occurs, their properties usually fall off the walls while their ceiling and roofs of their houses are badly affected.

One of the residents who does not want his name in print owing to the fact that he is a civil servant said; “I have observed and felt repeated sounds since September that sounds like the earth tremor we experienced in 2019”.

The residents have also taken the discussion on one of their social media platforms specifically WhatsApp, where they expressed serious concerns over the incident.

Some of the discussions captured by Forefront News states; “Does anyone have such experience? Because it’s beginning to give me concern and should call for action”.

@Alex Ogoke; “Heard the sound in the morning and a moment ago. Yes, you are very correct, I heard the sound in the afternoon. I thought maybe it was the blasting company. Let’s continue to observe it from now upwards”.

Another user said; “I heard d first sound early October like d one we experienced 2019. I heard d sound again last week thinking dat dis people have started blasting but today it happened two times, morning and afternoon. It’s really call for action.

“Yes, I have heard the sound today and last week. Pst Ogar was to help if it’s from the direction we suspected. Let us continue to watch.

“This moment the blasting check grand again 2:13am”.

Several attempts made by Forefront News to get the Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Abbas Idris to comment on the development did not yield any result as his telephone is switched-off.
