A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has set July 13, 2023 as date to determine the freedom or otherwise of the detained suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Court at its sitting on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, after listening to Counsels in the matter, fixed July 13, for ruling on the request by Emefiele to be set free from the custody of the secret police.
The Court’s decision followed a motion filed by the legal Counsel to Emefiele, Chief Joseph Daudu, urging the Court to grant the embattled CBN Governor freedom from the custody of the DSS.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had penultimate Friday suspended Emefiel from office following which the DSS trailed him to Lagos, arrested and put under its custody.
The DSS subsequently conducted a search in the Abuja and Lagos residences of Emefiele during which they carried some items that would assist their investigations.
Since the arrest of Emefiele, he has been kept under lock and key and kept away from public glare, a development that gave rise to speculations that he was denied access to his family and lawyers.
But, the DSS debunked the allegation, saying that Emefiele was been allowed access to members of his family and lawyers thus not incommunicado.
However, in spite of the position of the DSS, Emefiele through his lawyer, filed a motion before the High Court of the FCT requesting an order to allow the suspended Governor of the CBN access to his family members and lawyers.
The court having listened and consider the plea of Daudu on behalf of Emefiele, granted the order last week Friday.
