The Federal Government on Friday said that it has suspended the operations of the social media microblogging platform, Twitter in the country indefinitely.
The Federal Government’s indefinite suspension of the operations of Twitter was announced by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi.
The Minister said that the suspension followed the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
Mohammed said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
The action of the Federal Government is however seen as unprecedented and unnecessary.
