FG Backs Global Fight Against Terrorism
- Says ‘no money for terror’
BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – Nigeria’s commitment to the global fight against the financing of terrorism will not be compromised, the Federal Government has assured.
Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun said the country will continue to strengthen its institutions and re-invigorate efforts at tackling the financing of terrorism globally.
Speaking at an International Conference against the financing of terrorism in Paris, France, Mrs Adeosun said, “The Nigerian Government is very committed to the fight against terrorism and cutting off funding for terrorists’ activities.”
Adeosun, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the Conference, stated that the Federal government was out to identify and check all funding channels, adding that; “The Government, in addition to monitoring of the formal and informal channels of finance via the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and other bodies, is also monitoring ‘non-formal cash-based structures’, which can often be used for illicit purposes.”
She stressed the need for global coalition to address the root causes of terrorism rather than the symptoms, even as she pledged Nigeria’s readiness to actively participate in international partnership against terrorism and its funding channels
The Minister further explained that the men and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) were working to effectively track physical cash movements and transactions at the various sub-regional borders, including Benin Republic, Cameroon and Niger Republic.
A statement by Oluyinka Akintunde, Special Adviser, Media and Communications to the Minister of Finance, said the Conference, with the theme “No money for terror”, was hosted by the French President, Emmanuel Macron and attended by the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde; President of the World Bank Group, Jim Kim; US Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin as well as UK Chancellor, Phillip Hammond.
