The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has raised serious concerns over what it described as the deliberate attempt by the Federal Government and State governments to unlawfully seize workers’ contributions, stressing that it amounts to clear stealing of workers’ sweat.
This was as the organised Labour said that governance has been abandoned for 2027 politicking as leaders who should be working to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians have become consumed by power games, thereby leaving workers and ordinary Nigerians to bear the brunt of economic hardship and mounting insecurity that were imposed by their policies.
The NLC also condemned what it described as the systematic and brazen attempt by the Federal Government and State Governors to weaken democratic institutions and crush dissent.
President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who stated these at the opening ceremony of the 21st Rain School of the NLC, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, noted that Nigeria was on the brink of tyranny.
Ajaero said it must and should be understood that Nigeria as a democratic space, require all hands to be on deck, stressing that the very arena where citizens, particularly, the working class are constantly assaulted on their rights to free speech, assembly, and participation in governance will breed danger.
In the words of Ajaero; “The ongoing clampdown on civic freedoms and union activities is a calculated effort to silence the voices of Nigerian workers ahead of the 2027 general elections”.
