FIFA Picks 2027 Women’s World Cup Host On May 17
BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – With the expected vote at its Congress on 17 May, the World football governing body, FIFA will confirm the successful bid to host the flagship global tournament, the 2027 Women’s World Cup tournament.
According to a statement on the FIFA website, following the global success of the Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, the time has come to find out who will have the honour of hosting the competition in 2027.
Also for the first time in the tournament’s history, appointing the hosts will be decided through an open vote by the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, on 17th May 2024 and it will come from the bids submitted by member associations across the confederations.
However, with the Mexican Football Association and the U.S. Soccer Federation (joint submission) now withdrawn, FIFA’s choice will come from the two bids by the Royal Belgian Football Association, the German Football Association, and the Royal Netherlands Football Association (joint submission); and The Brazilian Football Association (BFA).
The FIFA Congress vote outcome will be announced across FIFA’s digital platforms on 17 May, confirming which of the two bids has been successful.
The 2027 tournament will be the 10th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, with China PR, Sweden, the USA, Germany, Canada, and France all having hosted on at least one occasion before the 2023 event.
Current FIFA Women’s World Cup holders, Spain, join USA (four titles), Germany (two), Japan, and Norway as the nations who have lifted the much-coveted trophy.
