BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – Safe for security officials that quickly moved to quell the fight and take effective control of the situation, Eagle Square, the venue of the national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), would have turned to a war zone as free for all fight broke out at the pavilion allocated to the delegates of Imo and Delta States.
The cause of the fight was not immediately known but it was gathered that it might not be unconnected with the factions that emerged from the two states.
The first fight took place at the Imo State pavilion allegedly between supporters of Governor Rochas Okorocha and the new leadership of the party in the state during which delegates converted their brooms to weapons of war in addition to exchange of fists and other available items.
While the fight by the Imo delegates was yet to calm down, that of Delta State burst while President Muhammadu Buhari was reading his speech. The fight by the Delta State delegates was more fierce and free for all which led several people to sustain various degrees of injuries.
The commotion attracted the attention of President Buhari, who while reading his speech had to looked towards the direction intermittently to ascertain where the commotion was taking place.
It was surprising to many that in spite of the heavy presence of security agencies at the venue of the convention with President Buhari and his deputy, Prof Yemi Osinbajo in attendance in addition to other dignitaries, there was fracas and serious commotion.
However, the fight did not affect the conduct of the convention which witnessed Comrade Adams Oshiomhole declared unopposed as the new National Chairman of the APC by the Chairman of the convention committee, who is Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa state.
