The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, August 11, 2025, released the former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Tambuwal.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had criticised the arrest and detention of Tambuwal, describing it as political witch-hunt and deliberate tactics of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to muzzle and stifle the opposition.

They vowed to resist the attempt to turn the EFCC into an arm of the Federal Government to fight key opposition figures in the country for the purpose of enthroning a one-party state in Nigeria.

Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a serving senator, was released after about 28 hours following his honouring an invitation extended to him by the EFCC at about 11:30am on Monday.

On arrival at the EFCC’s headquarters, Tambuwal was interrogated and later detained by the anti-corruption Agency at its Abuja headquarters.

Tambuwal, who is a known political associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, was taken into custody on Monday shortly after his arrival at the EFCC’s office.

However, details of his bail conditions were not made known as at the time of filing this report.

Reports indicated that the EFCC questioned Senator Tambuwal over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion.

A source at the EFCC said the investigation on Tambuwal is centred on possible breaches of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

It was further gathered that the transactions under probe were allegedly carried out during his tenure as governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023.

Additionally, he served as the 12th Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from 2011 to 2015.
