Gombe Govt Imposes 24 Hours Curfew On Billiri LGA
Moves to avert breakdown of law and order
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, GOMBE – A 24 hours indefinite curfew has been imposed in Billiri Local Government Area by the Gombe State Government to forestall any breakdown of peace and order.
The curfew, which is with immediate effect from Friday, February 19, 2021, follows the eruption of violence in Billiri Town over Mai Tangale chieftaincy stool in the area.
Events of the past few days have degenerated into serious security threat to both lives and property within the local government.
A press statement signed by the Secretary to the Gombe State Government (SSG), Professor Ibrahim Njodi Abubakar, affirmed the need for peaceful co-existence among the citizenry.
He stressed the resolve and commitment of the Governor Inuwa Abubakar-led administration to the protection of lives and property in Gombe State.
Consequently, the Government has suspended all forms of gatherings in Billiri Local Government Area.
Also, the statement ordered all security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the curfew while all citizens are expected to adhere to the directive, except those personnel providing essential services in the area.
Forefront learnt that the protest over selection of a new Mai Tangale, which started on peaceful note on Tuesday, turned violent on Friday leading to destruction of property.
However, there has been no reported loss of life as of the time of filing this report.
