Gov Dankwambo Loses Senate Race
- Oduah, Ubah lead Anambra pack
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUHA, OGBONNA ONYEKACHUKWU, AWKA – Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate for Gombe North Senatorial district will not be going to the Natioanl Assembly after his eight-year tenure at the State government House, Gombe.
His senatorial ambition was truncated by Alhaji Sa’idu Alkali of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who dusted him in the Saturday’s National Assembly poll.
Of the five Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nafada, Kwami, Gombe, Dukku, and Funakaye Gombe North Senatorial District, Dankwambo lost in four, including his Gombe council area.
According to the Returning Officer, Dr. Umar Gurama, APC’s Alkali scored the highest votes of 152,546 votes to beat Dankwambo who polled 88,016 votes.
Detailed results release showed that in Kwami LGA, APC scored 26,964 votes and PDP got 14,105 votes; In Gombe LGA, APC scored 60,934 votes against PDP’s 31,106; In Dukku LGA, APC polled 26,394 votes to PDP’s 13, 106 votes; In Funakaye LGA, APC scored 28,544 votes against 17, 204 votes for PDP; and Nafada LGA where PDP polled 12,335 votes to APC’s 9,710 votes.
Oduah floors APGA, APC in Anambra North
Former Minister of Aviation and incumbent Senator Stella Oduah has been declared winner of Anambra North Senatorial District by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Returning Officer, Prof. Hugh Maduka, said Oduah of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 113,989 votes to defeat 20 other candidates, including Mr Emmanuel Chinedu of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came second with 59,937 votes while Mr Nelson Onubogu of All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 11,995 votes to place third and Mr Chinedu Ekwealor of Young Progressives Party (YPP) got 1,024 votes in fourth place.
Speaking on her re-election, Oduah described the victory as a proof of God’s love for her and her people, even as she promised to sustain her quality representation at the Red Chamber.
Oduah, who lauded INEC on the polls’ conduct, called for improvement in the voting process, stating that; “The process is evolving and I believe that sometimes in the near future, we are going to perfect the electoral process, especially where we can all vote from wherever we are.
Ifeanyi Ubah humbles Uba brothers
Also in Anambra state, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) made history by producing its first senator elect in the person of Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, Ifeanyi Ubah.
Ubah, who also owns Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club, defeated the popular Uba brothers, Andy and Chris by polling polled 87, 081 votes to emerge winner of Anambra South Senatorial district in the February 23 election.
In the result was announced early Monday morning at Uruagu Nnewi North Council headquarters, his closest rival, Chief Chris Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 62,462 votes; Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) scored 51,269 votes; and Senator Andy Uba, the incumbent and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate got 13,245 votes.
The returning officer, Mr M. N. Umenweke, who declared the results, said Ubah emerged winner among the 26 candidates, who contested for Anambra South Senatorial District ticket.
Pundits are already celebrating that Ubah’s victory may have ended years of dominance of the Anambra South Senatorial District by the Uba brothers from Uga in Aguata area of the state.
Senator Ugochukwu Uba, the most senior of the Uba’s brothers, held the Anambra South Senatorial District between 2003 and 2007, while his younger brother and incumbent Senator Andy Uba held the position from 2011 to date.
