BY OUR CORRESPONDENT – Just hours after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and some top Federal Government functionaries left Owerri, the Imo State capital, another police station has again been torched by unknown gunmen in the State

The Vice President Osinbajo and the officials, including Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu, had visited the South-East state to inspect the extent of damage visited on the security facilities by attackers in the early hours of Monday, April 5, 2021

This latest attack comes barely 48 hours after gunmen had attacked the Police headquarters and Correctional centre in the State to set free many detainees and prison inmates, with some reported to have voluntarily surrendered themselves and returned to the prison.

According to reports, shortly after the federal government’s team departed the state, the unidentified gunmen struck and set Ehime Mbano Local Government Area Divisional Police Headquarters on fire.

Eyewitness accounts said that arriving at the station, the criminal gang released all suspects in detention before burning down the Police Divisional headquarters.

It was also gathered that the gunmen operated without any resistance from police personnel with a source confirming that: “Gunmen this evening razed Ehime Mbano LGA police divisional headquarters. On arrival, the gunmen carrying guns freed the suspects before wrecking the havoc.”

But the Police spokesperson in Imo state, Orlando Ikeokwu, told The Nation that the Command is yet to be officially contacted or briefed on the incident.

However, a senior police officer, who preferred anonymity, said the Command’s hierarchy is saddened by the latest development.

In the last two months, confirmed reports indicate that yet-to-be-identified gunmen have at different times stormed police divisions and stations in parts of the state including Mbano, Obowo, Abo Mbaise, Ihitte/ Uboma and Isiala Mbano, killings three officers and injuring others in the process. – With additional reports from The Nation
