Following what they described as the “unconvincing and insufficient” approach in addressing their concerns by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the organizers of the nationwide protests against hunger, bad governance, and high cost of living, have announced October 1, 2024 as new date for the resumption of the next stage of demonstrations.

This is coming against the backdrop of appeal by President Tinubu for an end to the nationwide protests.

However, the organisers pointed rejected the pleas of the President saying that his speech was hollow, unimpressive, unconvincing and insufficient in addressing the concerns of the Nigerian people which were clearly itemised.

One of the leaders of the protests, Omoyele Sowore, who announced the position of the organisers, said that as a result of the inability of President Tinubu to concretely address the issues, the next stage of the protests are set to commence on October 1, 2024.

Sowore, who revealed these during an interview with News Central Television, stressed that the Organisers are determined to continue their advocacy.

He also revealed that members of the organizing teams have been holding meetings to strategize ahead of the next phase of the protests, saying; “October 1, 2024 has been fixed for the resumption of the Nigeria protests since the government has refused to demonstrate sufficient interest in addressing the germane issues raised by the protesters”.

Sowore, who was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, further said that the second phase of the protests might even start earlier depending on situational variables.

He noted that the 10 days nationwide protests recorded huge success in spite of attempts by the Federal Government to halt it by sponsoring political thugs that infiltrated the peaceful protests in most parts of the country.

In the words of Sowore; The protests will resume at the beginning of October and might even start earlier, depending on situational variables,”

The protesters are demanding several key changes, including the restoration of fuel subsidy, end corruption in government, stabilisation of the Naira against the Dollar, the adoption of a new Constitution for the country, committed fight against insecurity and banditry amongst others.
