IPOB Invades Nnewi, Destroys DSS, FRSC, Other Facilities

BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have invaded Nnewi, the industrial city in Anambra State leaving on its trail anguish and destruction following attacks on public property in the area.

Reports said aside from attacking facilities of the Department of State Service (DSS) and setting some vehicles ablaze, the violent secessionists also visited their venom on property belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital (NAUTH).

However, there are unconfirmed reports that two passersby were fell by stray bullets killed during the attacks on the DSS and FRSC facilities.

Eyewitnesses’ account said the suspected IPOB militants drove in four Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) all the way from Owerri Road to Emecourt Road Junction where they fired gunshots into the air with passersby scampering for safety.

It was further gathered that before heading to the DSS and FRSC facilities, the hoodlums also drove unchallenged through the popular Nkwo Triangle Roundabout towards Nnobi Road.

However, the reports it was much later that a military armoured vehicle was seen driving around the town passing through Emecourt Road, but there was no incident or confrontation as the unknown gunmen had long gone from the area.

Confirming the unfortunate incident in Nnewi, Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, however, refused to disclose the affected public offices in the attack.

According to him; “At about 2 pm, of 3rd October 2021, the command received a distress call of a fire incident in Nnewi. The police operatives are currently on the ground and the area has since been cordoned off. Further details shall be communicated.”

Another competent source also hinted that the house of Engineer Joe Igbokwe, who is Special Adviser on Drainage and Water Resources to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was torched during the attack.

Though the number of casualties could not be confirmed as at the time of filing the report, it was learnt that military, police and other security operatives were already in the area to beef up security.
