Kano APC Crisis: Supreme Court Okays Ganduje-led Faction
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – Amid speculations of deft moves to call a truce, the Supreme Court on Friday endorsed the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led faction as the authentic All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Kano State.
In a lead judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, the apex court dismissed as lacking in merit the appeal filed by the APC faction to former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau against the earlier judgments of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The appeals at the Supreme Court followed two rulings of an FCT High Court which upheld ward and local government congresses won by the faction loyal to Ibrahim Shekarau and Senator Jibril Barau (Kano North) and numbering 17,908 and 1,319 members, respectively.
The Kano State chapter leadership tussle saw the emergence of Abdullahi Abbas as State chairman for Ganduje’s loyalists while the Shekarau’s camp produced Haruna Danzago for the same position.
However, in February 2022, the Court of Appeal dismissed three appeals that were lodged over the originating summons wrongly commenced in Abuja.
It ruled in favour of the Ganduje’s faction, saying the lower court had no jurisdiction as only the leadership of a political party could resolve disputes arising from its internal affairs, in line with its constitution.
The appellate court said the matter was an internal affair of the APC.
