Kano Council Of Chiefs’ Chairmanship: Emir Sanusi Retraces Step
BY IBRAHIM SALISU, KANO – Embattled Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, has finally bowed to pressure and accepted his appointment as the first Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs.
The decision has now put to rest the festering face-off between the Kano Emirate Council and the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led administration in the North West State over the appointment.
A letter dated December 19, 2019, and signed on behalf of the Kano Emirate Council by its Acting Secretary, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, said the Emir has graciously accepted the appointment.
The letter reads in part: “Kindly inform His Excellency that His Highness, Sarkin Kano, has not rejected his appointment as Chairman, Kano State Council of Chiefs.”
“His Highness has accepted the appointment. In doing so, his Highness requested for further directives of His Excellency, the Governor.
“For clarity, this directive may include appointment of other members of the Council, appointment of staff of the council, provision of accommodation for the secretariat and other logistics, to make the council operational.”
The letter, addressed to the Secretary to the Kano State government, further said; “you are hereby requested to graciously convey to his Excellency, the Governor the renewed assurances of the high esteem and regards of His Highness, Sarkin Kano.”
Governor Umar Ganduje had, in a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of Kano State Ministry of Special Duty, Musa Bichi on December 9, 2019, issued a two-day ultimatum to the Emir to either confirm his acceptance or rejection of the offer of his appointment.
Inside sources hinted that this deft move by the Emir may have saved his throne as he narrowly escaped the State Government’s hammer that was already threatening to descend on him for insubordination in rejecting the Council of Chiefs’ Chairmanship position.
