There was palpable tension on Sunday, July 6, 2025 following a brazen attack on the official residence of the State Government recognised Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, popularly known as ‘Gidan Rumfa’ by suspected loyalists of the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
A statement from the Kano Emirate media, said that the hoodlums stormed the palace, forcing their way through the main gate and in the process, they reportedly injured some security personnel on duty.
The statement also said that the hoodlums equally vandalized police vehicles parked within the premises of the palace.
It further said that the unwarranted attack came few hours after Bayero returned from a condolence visit to Saudi Arabia. Eye witnesses said that instead of using the regular Koki–Nassarawa route, Bayero drove past the Emir Palace Road, a development that was seen by many observers as a clearly provocative move.
“It is not the first time he has taken that route. There was a similar incident after a stop at his Mandawari residence, which was also viewed as a calculated attempt to stoke tension,” a resident said.
Since his removal, Aminu Ado Bayero has taken up residence at the Nassarawa Palace without the consent of the state government even as he was yet to file a legal challenge against his dethronement.
In spite of his dethronement by the Kano State Government, Bayero has continued to act like a reigning Emir, thereby igniting division within the ancient city.
However, the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf-led administration has stood firmly by Sanusi II, who returned to the throne with an overwhelming support from the Kano Emirate Council as 37 out of the 38 District Heads in the state, pledged allegiance to the leadership of Emir Sanusi.
The only District Head that is yet to pledge allegiance to Sanusi.
Curiously, the newly appointed Village Head of Ganduje, a nephew of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, was turbaned by Emir Sanusi.
