Kano Emir-ship Tussle: Police Reverse, Upholds New Chieftaincy Law
In what appeared a reversal of its earlier position in enforcing a Court Order, the Police Command in Kano State has declared that the issue of chieftaincy affairs has been perfected by the executive arm of government in the state.
The Commissioner of Police (CP) Usaini Gumel, who stated the position of the Command, also alerted the public of plans by some groups to incite violence in the state over the lingering Emir-ship tussle.
Gumel insisted that the security agencies are standing by the law and will strictly apply and enforce the existing law, stressing that the police in collaboration with other security agencies, have taken proactive measures to prevent the escalation of tensions as well as maintain law and order.
The Commissioner of Police, who stated these while briefing journalist on Sunday, May 26, 2024, said, credible intelligence indicated that some individuals are planning to stage protests which could lead to violence.
CP Gumel said flash point areas included; Iyaka Road, Kofar Naisa, Kofar Nasarawa, Brigade, Airport Road, Janbulo and Sani Mainenge areas of Kano metropolis.
The police boss said that the joint security teams have been deployed to strategic locations across the state to ensure peace and order, adding that the police have also embarked on aggressive patrols in and outside the metropolis to deal with any form of security threat.
He therefore warned that any attempt to hold processions or gatherings that may trigger violence will be met with swift action and resistance, stressing that those caught would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
Gumel said; “Residents are advised to remain calm, avoid unlawful gatherings or processions, and report any suspicious activities or individuals to security agents for prompt response.
“The joint security committee has adopted a comprehensive strategy to confront any form of threat in and outside the dissolved five Emirates. The security measures will prevent violence and maintain the safety and security of all residents in Kano State,” he assured.
Gumel however debunked rumours alleging that some of the protesters were already on Kano streets over the Emir-ship tussle, stressing that the rumours were part of the falsehood being circulated by miscreants with dubious intentions.
