Kano Emirate: Aminu Ado Bayero Emerges New Emir
The Kano State Government on Monday announced Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Bichi and son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, as the new Emir of Kano.
The selection of Emir Aminu followed the dethronement of former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The announcement of Emir Aminu was officially unveiled in the presence of the Kano Emirate kingmakers and other stakeholders at Ante Chamber, Government House, Kano.
Meanwhile, former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II has been moved by security agencies to Lafia, Nasarawa state where he is to remain banished.
Sanusi II was sacked as the Emir over alleged violation of the traditions, customs and practices of the ancient city leveled against him by the Kano State government
Ado Bayero, whose appointment was announced by the Secretary to the Kano State government, Usman Alhaji, is ascending the throne over six years after his father died with the recently deposed emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, being the then preferred candidate by the king makers.
The development came on the heels of video clips emerging in the social media and capturing a team of policemen who arrived the Emir of Kano palace to ferry Sanusi to exile in Nasarawa State.
Bayero, second son of the late Emir of Kano and cousin to Sanusi, is a Mass Communication graduate from the Bayero University, Kano. Until his new appointment, Bayero was the Emir of Bichi.
Reports said the new Emir’s residence has suddenly become a beehive of activities, with security beefed up to control movements in and out of the premises.
The sudden sack of Emir Sanusi, by the Kano State Government has brought to an end months of speculations of his intractable face-off with the State Governor, Abdulahi Umar Ganduje.
Sanusi, who took on the name of his dethroned grandfather, Muhammadu Sanusi, reigned for the five years, nine months on the throne.
He was the 14th emir from the Fulani Sullubawa clan. During his reign as the Emir, Sanusi was not only visible but also outspoken on many national and regional issues
Five (5) Things About The Exiled Sanusi
1. He is a fearless and undiplomatic man who spoke his mind without reservation: At a function years ago, he said integrity must go with capacity to perform as a leader.
2. He is one of the outspoken Royal Fathers: Sanusi spoke without fear. He once accused Governor Umar Ganduje of embarking on a jamboree to China. Amazingly, the governor was right at the event.
3. He was always on the lecture circuit: The dethroned Emir was always a delight at every lecture. He wooed audience with mastery of words and issues. He never spoke without applauses and claps.
4. He was suspended as CBN Governor: The former Managing Director/CEO of First Bank was nominated as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor in 2009 by late President Musa Yar’Adua.
However in 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan suspended him from office after he raised alarm on the US$20 billion NNPC scandal.
5. He was critical of government’s policies: Sanusi was hated as Emir by the northern conservatives for his outspokenness. He once blasted the State Government for misplaced priorities. He also criticised many practices in the north, calling for reforms in a region that is widely considered conservative. – Additional reports from the Nation
