The Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf-led Kano State Government has stated its intention of finding a lasting and amicable resolution of the crisis over the Emirship of Kano.

This might not be unconnected with the recent defection of Governor Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC) which is more favourably disposed to one of the contenders to the stool.

The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who stated this on Thursday, January 29, 2026, said the state government has already put in place some measures towards finding lasting peace and stability.

Waiya specifically said that the stalemate by two contending, emirs was nearing its concrete resolution, emphasising that the contenders are most likely to play an important role in the resolution.

According to Waiya; “It is possible that one amongst them may step down from the throne on his own, or seek reconciliation as a mutual understanding has been reached”.

The contentious emir of Kano stool has for the past two years generated so much tension and acrimony as the then NNPP-led Kano State Government had favoured the emirship of Muhammadu Sanusi II who is presiding from the main Gidan Rumfa palace while the former governor of the State, Abdullahi Ganduje as then National Chairman of the APC was believed to have used federal might to insist on having Aminu Ado Bayero as the emir and reigns from the Nassarawa mini-palace.

Speaking during a programme on Muhasa, a local radio station in Kano, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, pointedly said that the political unification of the state and federal governments under the APC had removed the primary obstacles to a peaceful settlement.

In the words of Waiya; “I can assure you that very soon, the Kano State Government will resolve the dispute over the Kano Emirate, because we are now one”.

The commissioner assured that the administration of Governor Yusuf remains committed to dialogue with all stakeholders, saying that the matter would not be allowed to generate tension or hinder governance.

He further said; “Our approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interests of the people of Kano State.

“The administration remains focused on “Kano First” agenda. The administration’s loyalty is premised on the development objectives of the State which must come before any personal or factional interests.

“Our priority is Kano. Anyone whose interest collides with that objective will not be allowed to slow down governance,” Waiya stressed.
